Elsie Ferro

Born July 24, 1923

Elsie saw people come and go at the Dartmouth Council on Aging. She spent twenty-seven years in many capacities at the Center. She still works at the information desk and makes everyone who comes through the Center’s door feel welcome. Her hugs are famous! No one is exempt from them, clients, volunteers and staff are all included in her great hugs.

For many years, her husband Jesse was at her side in some of her endeavors. She was married for sixty-seven years to her wonderful Jesse. He is no longer with us and is greatly missed by her and the people at the Center. He was always smiling!

Her volunteerism included helping in the kitchen to provide Meals on Wheels to be delivered to people’s homes, as well as clients at the Center. She organized dance parties and baked cakes for them, helped with bingo, provided knitted hats and booties for babies at the hospital and worked in the gift shop.

In 1991, Elsie was crowned, “Senior Sweetheart for the Dartmouth Council on Aging”. An honor well deserved. Her present title is, “The Social Butterfly”. This title is due to the fact that she still is a person who greets people with a smile and a welcome on the two days a week that she volunteers at the Center.

Elsie considers the DCOA her second home and is very thankful for all that has been done for her.

Dartmouth Cable Television recently did a program on all the volunteers at the Center and Elsie was a part of it. Rightfully so, since she has been a great asset to the Center and still is. The COA is grateful for all that she has contributed to make this establishment a place where people feel at home.
