Graziela Grace luiz

Born August 30, 1922

Grace was born in New Bedford, MA on Purchase Street and was delivered by a midwife.

She lost her Mom when she was seven.

She attended the DeValles School and Congdon School. At the age of 53 years old, she received a scholarship to attend New Bedford High School. While in school, her husband became ill and she had to quit to take care of him. However, she was able to go back to school eventually and received her diploma.

She has one daughter and wanted to make sure that she would get a good education and a good job. A good education has always been important to Grace and for her children. Her daughter is a nurse and has three children. One of her grandchildren is a teacher for special needs students; one is a pharmacist and the other a mechanic. She has five great grandchildren.

Being a good seamstress, Grace was able to make her daughter’s wedding gown.

She lives with her daughter and son-in-law and helped raise her grandchildren.

She was employed in several garment industries and also worked in the cafeteria at Buttonwood Zoo. When the mural was painted at the zoo, Grace was instrumental in their placing a lady bug in it.

She has volunteered at the COA for 19 years and was also a Senior Aide, with Coastline Elderly Services for many years. Very involved for many years in Social Services and giving back to those in need.
